You know the magnet. The one that held up your kid’s finger painting for exactly four hours before gravity won and it face-planted behind the trash can. If you’ve ever made bottle cap magnets and watched them slowly creep south on the fridge door like they’re trying to escape, the problem usually isn’t your fridge. It’s the magnet, the glue, or both.
Bottle caps make genuinely great magnets. They’re small, they’ve got a nice lip that holds resin or paper inserts, and they look way more intentional than they have any right to given that you pulled them out of a recycling bin. What You’ll Actually Need
Skip the flimsy craft magnets that come in sheets, the ones that feel more like stickers than magnets. They’re fine for a lightweight paper craft but a filled bottle cap has real weight, and weak magnets just can’t compete with gravity over time. Small rare earth disc magnets are cheap, strong, and small enough to hide inside the cap’s curve without adding bulk.
- Clean, flattened bottle caps (bend the edges back down with pliers if they got mangled taking them off)
- Small images, patterned paper, or washi tape scraps cut to fit inside the cap
- A dimensional sealer like Mod Podge Dimensional Magic, or clear two-part resin
- Rare earth disc magnets, roughly the size of the inside of the cap or smaller
- E6000 or a similar strong craft adhesive, not hot glue
Step One: Fill Before You Seal
Trace the inside of a cap onto your paper or photo, cut it slightly smaller than the traced line, and glue it flat into the cap. Air bubbles under the paper are the number one reason resin toppings look cloudy later, so press it down firmly and let it fully dry before adding anything liquid on top.
Once that’s dry, add your sealer. Dimensional Magic is more forgiving for beginners because it self-levels and doesn’t require mixing, but two-part resin gives a harder, glassier finish if you’re patient enough to deal with mixing ratios and curing time. Either way, lay the caps perfectly flat while they cure. A tilted cap means a lopsided dome, and nobody wants a magnet that looks like it’s melting.

The Part Everyone Gets Wrong: Attaching the Magnet
Hot glue is the villain of this whole project. It feels strong when it’s warm, then turns brittle and lets go the second your kitchen gets a little humid, which, if you live anywhere with actual summer weather, is basically always. Use E6000 or a comparable adhesive instead. It smells terrible, needs ventilation, and takes longer to set, but it actually bonds metal to metal and stays flexible so it won’t crack under weight.
Press the magnet into the center back of the cap, hold it firmly for about thirty seconds, then leave it alone for at least a full day before you touch it again. Rushing this step is exactly how magnets end up sliding.
Why They Still Slide, Even With Strong Magnets
Sometimes the magnet is fine but the fridge isn’t. Stainless steel fridges are often only magnetic on certain panels, and some newer models use a thin steel layer that just doesn’t grip as well as older appliances. If your magnet slides on a spot that should hold, test a plain magnet there first before blaming your craft skills.
For heavier caps holding up photos or notes, pair two magnets per cap instead of one, placed on opposite edges rather than dead center. It distributes the weight and stops that annoying pivot where the whole thing tips forward.
