The actual technique

Thinner shells, like some clam varieties, are actually trickier than thicker ones because there’s so little material to work with before you punch through the other side. Go slower on those and drill from both sides toward the middle if the shell is delicate. Thicker shells like whelks or conchs can handle more direct pressure but take longer.
Turn your drilled shells into something
Once you’ve got a stack of shells with clean holes, a wind chime is one of the most satisfying uses for them, especially with summer evenings still stretching out long enough to actually enjoy a porch. Thread fishing line or thin jewelry wire through several shells at varying lengths, tie them to a driftwood branch or an embroidery hoop, and hang the whole thing somewhere it’ll catch a breeze.
